Elizabethan edition of Eusebius’ Six Hundred Years History, 1585

Eusebius, of Caesarea, Bishop of Caesarea, [approximately 260-approximately 340].  The auncient ecclesiasticall histories of the first six hundred yeares after Christ, written in the Greeke tongue by three learned historiographers, Eusebius, Socrates, and Euagrius. Eusebius Pamphilus Bishop of Cæsarea in Palæstina vvrote 10. bookes. Socrates Scholasticus of Constantinople vvrote 7. bookes. Euagrius Scholasticus of Antioch vvrote 6. bookes. VVherevnto is annexed Dorotheus Bishop of Tyrus, of the liues and endes of the prophetes, apostles and 70. disciples. All which authors are faithfully translated out of the Greeke tongue and now perused and corrected by Meredith Hanmer, Doctor of Diuinitie. Last of all herein is contained a briefe chronographie collected by the said translator, with a copious index of the principall matters throughout all the histories.

Imprinted at London : by Thomas Vautroullier dwelling in the Blackefriers by Ludgate, 1585. [12], 190, 201-404, [4], 405-600, [20] p  The blank leaf 3D6 is missing as often; the final leaf of the index, either blank or with a colophon.  A very good copy with original boards sometime rebacked possibly early C20th in tan leather over raised bands.

Title page with light brown marks, diminishing for a few pages and disappears by page 1 of text.  Some minor marks, but generally a fresh copy. The final leaf is fully notated in an Elizabethan hand. Final leaf repaired at the base not affecting text.

This is the second edition and only the second edition published in the C16th, the first being published in 1577.
