The first edition of the full Bible in Amharic. Large quarto 10 x 7½” [25x19cm]. Collates complete; A-6G4, A-Ss2 (ie.  +  pages). It is D & M 1560. The first leaf is in Latin, the rest of the text in Ge’ez characters. Victorian original rubbed elaborate blind-tooled boards recently rebacked over raised bands. The Latin title is slightly browned, apart from some slight browning a little light foxing in a few places, the text is clean and crisp throughout. Thomas Pell Platt published the original MS in increasing parts staring with the Gospels in 1824, the whole of the NT in 1829 and then this, the complete Bible in 1840. This was the sole translation until the time when Haile Selassie ordered a new translation in 1960. We can only find 2 Institutional entries.
