Published by London: J. and R. Tonson in the Strand. (1749) London: J. and R. Tonson in the Strand., 1749. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 2 volumes. Full leather, finely rebacked with original labels, raised bands. 1749. Published by J. Tonson with full page engravings and notes by Newton. There is some small marginal worming right at the end pages not affecting text and mainly in the addenda pages. Otherwise this is a lovely, crisp, wide margined set in a handsome and mainly original binding.
An exceptional production with engravings by Charles Grignion after Francis Hayman. Hayman (1708-1776) was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768 and its first librarian. He illustrated many books in the C18th in the French Rococo style including Shakespeare, Richardson, and this set of Milton’s Paradise Lost.
