A uniform set of 5 separately published works on Proverbs by John Dod and Robert Cleaver printed between 1608 and 1612 in mixed editions. This comprises most of the chapters which were expounded by this renowned pair of Puritan preachers with the exception of the first and second chapters. There was also an additional work called Bathshebas instructions to her sonne Lemuel which was on the last chapter of Proverbs, published in 1614. The set is textually complete, lacking only blanks, and is generally very good, with some copies being nearly fine and crisp. All 5 volumes uniformly rebound in half calf over raised bands. Part 1: At London : imprinted by Felix Kyngston, for Thomas Man, 1612. [6], 128, [1]p initial blank appears to have been bound in at the end. 18cm x 12cm Crisp pages, some minor marks. Part 2: London : Printed by William Hall, for Thomas Man, 1612. 18cm x 12cm [6], 191p lacks initial and final blanks otherwise complete. Pages are crisp, some headings are marginally shaved, but text not affected. Minor marks otherwise a very good copy. Part 3: Imprinted at London : By R.B. for Roger Iackson, and are to be sold at his shop in Fleetstreet, neare the Conduit, 1608. Collates complete: [4], 152, [i.e.154], [1]p. Errors in pagination, p.90 misnumbered as 60, p.115 repeated in numbering. 18cm x 12cm Crisp pages, some early ink marginalia, a very good copy. Part 4: London : Printed by Thomas Haueland for Thomas Man, 1609. Collates complete: [24], 157, [3] p. ; 4⁰ Crisp pages, some minor marks. 18cm x 12cm Part 5: London : Printed [by William Stansby and Thomas Creede] for Roger Iackson, and are to be sold at his shop in Fleetestreete neere the Conduit, 1611. [12], 170, [2] p. ; 4⁰ 18cm x 12cm Running title reads: Prouerbs. A variant of STC 6965; imprint date differs. Closed tear to sig O at foot touching a few letters. Some old damp stains towards the final pages. The heading at the close is shaved touching some letters but not affecting the bod of the text. All 5 volumes recently rebound in half calf over raised bands with green and red labels. All in all a clean set, textually complete, lacking only some blanks, and occasional marks. ‘Decalogue’ Dod was a non-conforming English clergyman, taking his nickname for his emphasis on the Ten Commandments.
